San Francisco - Day 2

I did not mean to abandon my San Francisco posts. Life can just get busy with puppies. And going back to Fort Worth. And work. So, anyway, Day 2...

Day 2 was Alcatraz day! We woke up early in the morning and had breakfast at this tiny little cafe in the Fisherman's Wharf area. That was one of my favorite things about San Francisco - all the tiny, cozy restaurants and shops. This particular cafe only took cash as payment...we didn't know this until we were trying to pay the bill... AJ had to go find an ATM and I had to awkwardly sit in the cafe staring at our unpaid bill. The waitress kept asking me, "where did your friend go?"

After finally paying for breakfast we went to Pier 33 for our tour of Alcatraz. We rode a boat out to Alcatraz Island. We walked to the top of fairly steep hill, to where the prison was located, and then we took an audio tour of the prison. It was pretty fun and informative. The only problem was that it was COLD & WINDY on the island and there wasn't any heat in the prison. My hands and face were numb by the end of the tour and the hot coffee that I had on the boat on the way back had never tasted so good. On the boat ride back, a pigeon decided to join us. I don't blame him, who would want to fly all that way?

Once we were back on the mainland, we explored Pier 39 a little and saw the sea lions. Other than that there were just a bunch of tourist-y shops.

That night we had Italian food on Columbus Avenue - well actually the restaurant we went to was right off of Columbus. This was one of the part's the of the trip that I was most excited about. I love Italian food and San Francisco has SO MANY options. It's Italian food heaven - you could try a different restaurant every night for months on end. We chose a restaurant called Firenze by Night because we had researched it and found out it supposedly had the best gnocchi. I adore gnocchi, but you don't find it on every Italian menu. They weren't lying either, it was really, really good. SO much fun.

After dinner we got cheesecake and cannolis and took them back to the hotel room to eat while we watched the season finale of The Biggest Loser. Haha. Yes, we're healthy like that.
